Why Vermont's Nonprofits Should Be Thinking About Digital Security | Vermont Public Radio

Why Vermont's Nonprofits Should Be Thinking About Digital Security | Vermont Public Radio: "Bernholz is a senior research scholar at Stanford University who studies digital civil society and works on using technology for social good among other things. She writes extensively on philanthropy, technology and policy on her blog, philanthropy2173.com, and she’s going to be in Vermont for a series of workshops this week about how nonprofit organizations can better secure their digital world.

On the digital vulnerability of nonprofits

"They tend to be less well resourced, and taking good care of your digital infrastructure takes two things: smarts and money. They've got plenty of the former and usually not so much of the latter. So they are vulnerable."

Consumers are writing 7 percent fewer checks each year (and have been for several years), and since 2003, the U.S. Federal Reserve is providing incentives to banks to move away from manual check processing."

Nonprofit Uses App to Survey Homeless People Daily—What Do You Need? | Nonprofit Quarterly delivers the latest news and investigative reports

Nonprofit Uses App to Survey Homeless People Daily—What Do You Need? | Nonprofit Quarterly delivers the latest news and investigative reports: "In recent years, as technology and social media have expanded many non-profits have chosen to use these resources to help homeless people. In 2014, we reported on statistics that showed that homeless people increasingly owned cell phones. One homeless woman even credited Twitter for singlehandedly pulling her out of homelessness. The government has gotten on the technology bandwagon to help solve the problem of homelessness as well, launching the Project REACH (Real-time Electronic Access for Caregivers and the Homeless) competition in 2012 to build a mobile web app for smartphones and tablets that could help the homeless find nearby resources. Our Calling, a nonprofit in Dallas, Texas, developed an iPhone app homeless people can use to find shelters, food pantries, free meals and job training. Others can also use the app to snap a photo to direct staff and volunteers to the GPS location where a homeless person is in need."

Survey: Online Fundraising May Diminish Effectiveness of Supporter Communications | Nonprofit Quarterly delivers the latest news and investigative reports

Survey: Online Fundraising May Diminish Effectiveness of Supporter Communications | Nonprofit Quarterly delivers the latest news and investigative reports: "A small survey of 114 leaders of nonprofits with budgets between $100,000 and $200,000 finds that 43 percent of respondents view online fundraising as only “somewhat effective” relative to traditional direct mail, and 35 percent say it is “not particularly effective.” Only three percent see it as “highly effective,” even given the cost considerations.

While the survey is very small, those findings are fairly stark and may serve at least as anecdotal evidence to which we need to pay attention. The accounting firm Marks Paneth, which presumably has no dog directly in the fundraising game, conducted this Nonprofit Pulse survey. Respondents included executive directors, CFOs, treasurers, COOs, development directors, vice presidents and board members."

The Data Every Nonprofit Should be Tracking - Nonprofit Hub

The Data Every Nonprofit Should be Tracking - Nonprofit Hub: "Data can be a daunting thing. IBM says that 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are produced every day. There’s no denying that some of that information could be used by your organization, and you don’t need to be a statistics major to take advantage of it. Here are some things that can help you understand how your organization can use data for good.

Why You Should Collect Data
You may be skeptical of the benefits of collecting data, or think that it doesn’t translate well to your organization. The truth is that data can be used for almost anything. You could utilize it for everything from marketing and social media, to volunteer and donor management.

We conducted a recent survey on the state of data in the nonprofit sector, in conjunction with EveryAction. A common reason nonprofits listed for not collecting data was the time commitment that tracking and interpreting it takes."

Opinion: A Decade In, Twitter Is the Real-Time Pulse of Nonprofit Advocacy - The Chronicle of Philanthropy: "So Twitter is 10 years old.

But a decade after co-founder Jack Dorsey sent the first tweet, what does the nearly ubiquitous short-message social network mean for nonprofits, citizens’ movements, and philanthropy?

Here’s my view: In the billions of messages of fewer than 140 characters that have swirled through Twitter’s servers over the last decade, a distinct vein of social action, activism, and philanthropy has made it the beating, real-time pulse of the nonprofit world.

In short, it’s hard to imagine being active in the social sphere without Twitter."

And our data reflects this. Just over three years ago, we added the “Volunteer and Causes” section to the LinkedIn profile. So it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that there are now over 10 million professionals who have added the Volunteer Experience and Causes section to their LinkedIn profiles – sharing the incredible work they’ve done and highlighting the causes and organizations they care most about. That’s up from three million just a year ago. To put that in perspective, 4.5 million of these professionals are in the U.S. where there are approximately 1.5 million nonprofits – meaning there are 3 professionals who want to help to every single nonprofit.

In addition, more than 4 million members have gone a step further in making a meaningful difference by signaling that they are interested in skilled volunteer work or joining a nonprofit board."

Following the announcement The Community Foundation spokesperson Kim Russell said that the decision to end the event came as a result of independent online fundraisers, such as Kickstarter, rising to prominence in the past few years.

“Five years ago not as many nonprofits had an online giving portal on their website, more do now. We were just kind of looking at where the event had gone and where it could go,” she said."

How Much Code Should You Know?: Associations Now: " common new kind of New Year’s resolution—competing with old standbys like losing weight and quitting smoking—has been a pledge to learn a programming language. It sounds like a good idea, but perhaps the real goal for non-technical employees should simply be a pledge to become a little more tech-literate in 2016."

Why Your Nonprofit Website Needs a Privacy Policy (And What to Include)

Why Your Nonprofit Website Needs a Privacy Policy (And What to Include): "If you’re a typical nonprofit, you probably collect a significant amount of sensitive information from your users—even if it’s simply the IP addresses gathered by your site statistics package. And after last year’s Target debacle and frightening data breach, millions of users are more skittish than ever about providing personal information to both businesses and organizations. Suddenly information that users have considered private and protected seems all too vulnerable.

In this age of data-driven marketing, it’s more important than ever to position yourself as a safe and trusted organization. Your privacy policy can no longer be an afterthought—it needs to be a prominent feature on your website and written in words that the average user can understand without hiring a lawyer."

Top Social Media Predictions For 2016 | PC Tech Magazine: "This time last year, we published our 2015 social media predictions. It seems those predictions were proven accurate, so we thought we’d do the same for 2016.

Not to blow our own trumpet, but our main 2015 social media predictions we’re spot on. We predicted huge growth in video and paid posts. Just take a look at your newsfeed compared to last year. We also predicted a massive increase in access to big data. We can see this in things like the success of Facebook’s Dark Posts and Facebook’s incredibly detailed targeting options for advertisers."
