Wild Apricot Blog : Online collaboration tools for non-profit board members

From Wild Apricot Technology Blog
Wild Apricot Blog : Online collaboration tools for non-profit board members: "Online collaboration tools for non-profit board members

Non-profit organizations do better when their board members and staff collaborate effectively. One of the board's biggest responsibilities is strategic planning. In most non-profits creating the annual strategic plan is a very time-consuming (and painful) process. It starts with a face-to-face meeting, then dozens of emails with document drafts, revisions and comments start flying around. Phone calls and meetings multiply unheeded. An unlucky soul who has volunteered to put everything together would spend hours comparing pages and sentences between different versions. As you can imagine, this whole process could take up months!"

Among the varied microblogging services that exist, Twitter (www.twitter.com) has pulled ahead as the most popular, with more than three million users sending upwards of one million messages per day (from: http://press.oreilly.com/pub/pr/2143)."

Although Kanter has spearheaded several unusual funding efforts, her most effective was at the Seattle Gnomedex 8.0 Conference in August of this year, where she raised over $2500 in just 90 minutes by challenging highly connected geeks to tap into their extensive Twitter networks. It started with a mass tweet asking people to help her “send Leng Sopharath, a young Cambodian woman, off to her junior year of college in good health.” Tweets and retweets traveled through the online community, and by the end of the conference, Kanter had collected almost $4000. She acknowledges the results as a “special success story,” but believes it’s an example of how the power of networks can be utilized by non-profi"

A new AFP Partnership

AFP has launched a profile on “ammado” (www.ammado.com). ammado is an online community connecting nonprofits, socially responsible companies, and engaged individuals who want to effect change at a global and local level.

This blog first made mention of ammado last year when the site was used to network attendees of the International Fundraising Conference in Amsterdam (October 2007). Of particular interest is ammado’s global donations feature, the ammado Giving Circle which allows people to donate to their favorite nonprofits from all over the world. Donors can choose from 33 different currencies for their donations, and even the smallest contributions are displayed in an innovative and appealing new way. All nonprofits, big or small, national or international, can join ammado for free. Check out the AFP profile, at http://www.ammado.com/nonprofit/afp, also the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy at http://www.ammado.com/nonprofit/afpfoundation.

AFP is now partnering with ammado to help members network with colleagues around the world. To celebrate the partnership and the season of giving, ammado will give the first 10,000 AFP members who create a profile on ammado an e-voucher for $1.00 to spend on the cause of their choice. What can a mere dollar do? One dollar can, for example, get a child vaccinated against the measles or provide safe drinking water for a child for 50 days. Get your e-voucher, make a donation—even to your own organization on ammado—join the AFP profile and reach out to your fundraising colleagues by creating your network! AFP members can use this link to get started.
If you have questions about this partnership feel free to contact mnilsen@afpnet.org

Last August, I saw the impact of Twitter's velocity first-hand with a fundraising experiment. I was able to raise $2,500 in 90 minutes at Gnomedex. I wondered whether or not those results would be replicable? Right before Thanksgiving, the TweetsGiving effort and Avi Kaplan helped Epic Change raise over $10,000 in 48 hours to build a classroom in Tanzania. The campaign used the power of retweeting to spread the message across twitter users.

As Lucy Bernholz notes, this might be one more sign that fundraising on Twitter is less marginal and moving to the middle. Lucy points to some implications for organizations to consider:"

Traditional mass media forums provide few opportunities for weak social movement organizations to advance their frames. As a result, organizations without sufficient resources are largely absent from public discourse in the mass media forum. Fortunately, social media sites that rely on user-generated content create forums for more democratic public discourse, and the high visibility of user-generated content and conversation promotes a sense of collective identity and power. How can social movement organizations best take advantage of these forums to promote their own stories and frames, and encourage activism?"

Jhai PC: Low-cost computer links villages to the Web | csmonitor.com: "n the small Hmong village of Phonsavad in Laos, three hours upriver from the nearest road, the Jhai PC is a portal to another world. Built to withstand monsoon rains and extreme temperatures and linked to the Web by satellite, the tough computer brings villagers weather reports, current prices for their rice crops and weavings, and contact with relatives living abroad.

It comes with a communications suite that both literate and illiterate villagers can use and will eventually host a videoconference kit for checkups with doctors. The computer costs about $200 and can charge its battery from a generator powered by pedaling a stationary bike."

Students Flock to Microfinance to Learn Real World Skills - NAM: "PALO ALTO, Calif. – Idealistic students who wanted to give back to their community used to volunteer with food drives, homeless shelters or community centers. Charity was once very localized. Now, a co-ed can go online and donate to a poor entrepreneur in Nicaragua with the click of a mouse.

The Internet has spiked awareness of world economic problems and encouraged many young people to take on a new form of service – microfinance. Throughout the developing world, microfinance gives financial services to low-income entrepreneurs. Even loans of less than $100 have allowed entrepreneurs to create or improve existing businesses. It also provides savings accounts and insurance for the poor to ensure financial stability."

You have to wonder sometimes. As laptops get smaller and lighter, their run times often suffer due to fact that smaller laptops have smaller batteries.
