Allen Gunn: Netsquared 2009: Making the Virtual Proximal: "As someone who organizes nonprofit technology events for a living, I spend a lot of time reflecting on what role live convenings should play in this ever-more virtually networked world. DIOSA | Communications: Facebook Best Practices for Nonprofit Organizations

DIOSA | Communications: Facebook Best Practices for Nonprofit Organizations: "1) Configure your Page's 'Settings' to allow more participation.

The new Facebook Pages that launched in March 2009 were designed to inspire more action and participation by your fans. That's a good thing because in truth most Pages with the old design had very few wall posts or discussions. People became a 'fan' and occasionally read 'Updates' and that was about it. The new Pages have proven to be a much better tool in terms of inspiring online conversations around your organization's mission and programs. The ability to build community is essential in order to have a return on your investment (ROI) when using social networking sites, and you can't build community on Facebook if you don't allow your fans to participate on your Page. This will mean that you are going to have check your Page more regularly for rogue comments, but that is a small price to pay for increased community participation and ROI."

Where are my people?

Where are my people?: "You’ve seen those nonprofit fundraising challenges, haven’t you? A funder or corporation puts up some funds—donation or matching grant money—and asks nonprofits and their supporters to compete for it. Maybe it’s a race of donations or votes, or perhaps memberships to a group on FaceBook. Our own Giving Challenge was an early example. Target is running one now, and there have been many in between."

massnonprofit.org ::

massnonprofit.org ::: "recent blog post on social media noted that hiring a 23-year-old to drive social networking initiatives at a nonprofit, because he or she uses this technology everyday, is a bit like hiring a lumberjack to drive the program at an environmental nonprofit.

But the only thing worse would be if the nonprofit recruited that 23-year-old to do the same work as a volunteer—which is what many smaller nonprofits are considering, especially those without the staff to get started with social media."

The two-day event is run by TechSoup, a San Francisco organization that connects nonprofits with tech equipment and educational resources.

Each year, TechSoup issues a technology challenge to find the most creative use of technology by nonprofits around the world. The 15 finalists are brought to San Jose for the conference to present their ideas, network and compete for about $50,000 in funding. The challenge this year focused on nonprofits using mobile technologies to address a social problem."

Rock Bands Use Twitter to Raise $850K for Fan's Heart Transplant: "Some musicians have criticized Twitter for being the 'highest form of narcissism,' but, over the last few weeks, Twitter users have given thousands of reasons to prove that the microblogging community will overwhelmingly come to the aid of others. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, with the help of the band Jane's Addiction, has managed to raise $850,000, thanks in part to Twitter, for a fan in need of a heart transplant."

Search Engine Wars: Google Aims for Social Search, as Microsoft Chases It With Bing | Technomix | Fast Company

Search Engine Wars: Google Aims for Social Search, as Microsoft Chases It With Bing | Technomix | Fast Company: "Google has really been pushing new features lately, and getting news interest as developments like Wolfram Alpha and Twitter's live search seem to be innovating how search engines work. But when speaking to reporters, Google's Group Product Manager Ken Tokusei revealed another new angle that the company is investigating--personalized, social-network style results to search queries. He noted that people are using the net more and more to find out more personally-relevant soft information like restaurant recommendations rather than traditional hard fact searches. Tokusei then acknowledged that Google would like to weave in search responses from people you're acquainted with, and admitted that 'We haven't gotten to the point where results are seen as if they come from someone you know.' For now, Google will add a slightly personalized, more human angle to search queries by letting users rate search responses and delete unrelated links."
