Mario’s millions: could US charity gaming marathons sweep the UK?

The craze for video gaming for charity has seen some events rake in more than $1m in the US. Could UK fundraisers tap in?

Could The IRS Disallow Ice Bucket Challenge Charitable Contributions?

Could The IRS Disallow Ice Bucket Challenge Charitable Contributions?

OK, rest easy; the IRS isn’t coming after your ALS donation. While the
principle of donative intent is very real, in recent years, the courts
have tied this principle to a “quid pro quo test,” which states that in
order for a donation to lack donative intent, the donor must anticipate
receiving a financial benefit from the contribution commensurate
with the value the donor transferred to the charity. Because an ice
bucket dodger has received no financial benefit, but rather merely a
physical one, the contribution is (should be) immune to attack. Plus, I
think I’ve read somewhere that the IRS is dealing with a bit of a public
perception problem these days, so attacking contributions to a horrible
disease is probably not in its best interest.

Is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a Model for Jewish Fundraising?

Is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a Model for Jewish Fundraising?

The
Facebook frenzy created by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has now been
replaced by back-to-school photographs, but the results have left
leading Jewish organizations asking themselves, “Is this the fundraising
wave of the future?”

“I don’t believe fundraising is going in that direction,” said J.M.
Schapiro, 2014-15 fundraising campaign chair for The Associated: Jewish
Community Federation of Baltimore.

The Ice Bucket Challenge Won’t Solve Charity’s Biggest Problem - Dan Pallotta - Harvard Business Review

So, are we looking at the future of charity? We are glimpsing the
potential of momentary collective engagement, but at the same time, we
are seeing the confining rules by which nonprofits must play,
collectively imprisoned in an ancient way of thinking. The ALS
Association is already being scrutinized to make sure it doesn’t spend a
penny of the Ice Bucket money on anything but research. So when the
enthusiasm fades, there will be nothing there to replace it, because
investment in the replacement was forbidden.

Yes, There Is a Challenge With the ALS Association Ice Bucket Challenge : FundRaising Success

Yes, There Is a Challenge With the ALS Association Ice Bucket Challenge : FundRaising Success: The last few weeks have been quite interesting to watch as the ALS Ice Bucket ChallengeOpens in a new window took over the fundraising landscape. In general, here is my summary of the thinking:

Fundraisers should engage more with older people online, new research shows

Fundraisers should engage more with older people online, new research shows: Charities could be missing out on donations by not engaging with older people through online and mobile channels, according to new research.

A report, Time for UK Fundraising to Look Up, published today by the agencies Xtraordinary Fundraising and Forster Communication and fundraising software company Blackbaud, looks at the giving habits of ‘baby boomers’, those born between 1946 and 1964, and ‘civics’, born before 1945.
