Gabe Rivera: What I Read | The Atlantic Wire
How do people deal with the torrent of information that rains down on us all? What's the secret to staying on top of the news without surrendering to the chaos of it? In this series, we ask people who seem well-informed to describe their media diets. This contribution is from Gabe Rivera, creator of Techmeme, Memeorandum, and Mediagaze

With so many new technologies and tools, we business owners often feel as if we’re playing catch-up — as if we don’t even know what we don’t know. In just the last few years, there’s been a land grab by newly minted social media experts staking claim to social media prowess. Last month, the team over at Thought Lead hosted an online meet-up of 60 social media and online marketing experts titled The Influencer Project. The one-hour seminar gave all of the experts 60 seconds to offer their best advice on how companies could increase their influence online. For anyone with attention-deficit impulses (ahem) this was nirvana."

Focus on Impact, Not Transactions, for Better Donation Pages - Resource Center - AFP: "Focus on Impact, Not Transactions, for Better Donation Pages

(Sept. 7, 2010) It was only a postcard, but it caught my eye. A direct mail piece from a nonprofit organization, its sharp graphics and design enticed me to read it. Its well-written copy invited me to visit the organization's website to donate. Impressed, I decided to check out the organization."

In the last few years, cell phones have become full-fledged computers with high-speed Internet connections. This is great news for nonprofits, as it will change the game for enabling distribution to a whole new, growing audience. There are approximately 4.6 billion mobile handsets in the world — this compared to only about 1 billion desktop computers. As mobile data plans become affordable, people are quickly becoming aware of how easy it is to get to a browser and, therefore, the Internet on their mobile phones."

How Non-Profits are Exploring Augmented Reality Tech
How Non-Profits are Exploring Augmented Reality Tech: "Augmented reality promises a new level of interaction between people and data. Now, even the newest for-profit applications can turn heads by utilizing this new advanced technology.
The non-profit sector has started to experiment with augmented reality. One of Sunlight Labs’ early entries is their Recovery.gov mashup. Another example is Amsterdam’s Allard Pierson Museum, which highlights virtual reconstructions of Satricum and the Forum Romanum. But while there are early leaders, non-profits generally lag behind in market experimentation."

In computers we trust?
In computers we trust?: "It happens all the time. You're feeling good — your funders are onboard; the programs you've been struggling with are finally in place — it seems you've got it under control. But then your colleague's nephew — you know the one, the computer geek everyone refers to as the 'whiz kid'— leaves town for a couple of months. All of a sudden the core of your operations has lost its footing, usurping your sense of confidence along with it."
