WASHINGTON - In any given year, many regions of the world need help with famine, floods and other catastrophes. Most of these are largely forgotten, however, when high-profile disasters like tsunamis and hurricanes grab world attention.
The D.C.-based U.N. Foundation, established by a $1 billion donation in September 1997 by CNN founder Ted Turner, is forging a series of innovative partnerships to bring technology to bear on the needs of these hard hit areas."

This New Year's Eve I didn't watch the ball drop on Times Square because I was glued to my laptop helping my favorite cause, the Sharing Foundation, raise almost $100,000 via my blog!
Three weeks ago, using what I learned from my first personal fundraising campaign, I launched a second campaign to raise money for the Sharing Foundation education programs using the Network For Good Charity Badge and entering the Yahoo! For Good competition which would double the amount raised by the winner."

Community Resource Network, a nonprofit organization set up a dozen years ago to provide discounted Internet services to Kansas City's nonprofit community, no longer will sell Internet access and Web-hosting after this year.
CRN is exiting those business lines to focus on software development, Executive Director Ken Ortbals said Wednesday. To smooth the transition for the 250 nonprofits CRN serves, Kansas City-based Computers & Tele-Comm Inc. took all 13 of CRN's computer servers on Dec. 8 and already has started serving its customers."

The foundation was co-founded by Professor Muhammad Yunus, the bank's founder and managing director, who also won this year's Nobel Peace Prize."

As emerging Web 2.0 technologies continue to spread across the Internet, more people are becoming exposed to wikis, collaborative Web sites that allow users to create and edit online content without requiring extensive technical skills.
In early November, TechSoup hosted an online wiki event, where nonprofit techies came together to pool their knowledge and trade tips about using this new technology. Throughout this three-day event, a number of organizations shared stories about how their nonprofits are using wikis to work and communicate more effectively."

In the business world, technology is used for its competitive edge, to increase efficiency and cut costs. Although nonprofits do not have stockholders or owners to satisfy, they do have a “bottom line” to consider. If a nonprofit doesn’t meet its guidelines, stock will not plummet, but programs and services – and the populations they serve -- may suffer. Unlike their business counterparts, however, nonprofits have been slow to adopt new technologies, one of the biggest reasons being the perception that investment in technology is an unnecessary use of money."

Local nonprofits tap the power of YouTube
California Coastal Commission,City Council,Malibu Beaches: "Launched in late 2005 with an initial investment of $3.5 million, and recently purchased by the Internet giant, Google, for $1.65 billion, YouTube has afforded under-funded video artists and citizen journalists the opportunity to post their 'home videos' to a potential market of hundreds of millions of users.
And now, two local nonprofits have launched web campaigns on YouTube: the California Wildlife Center and the anti-LNG activists with Coastal Advocates.
Victoria Harris, spokeswoman for the California Wildlife Center, said the decision to tap YouTube was a function of economics: 'We are funded purely on private donations and YouTube is free.'"
