It’s no secret that blogs are big. Technorati, which tracks blogs, has identified 63.2 million and reports 175,000 new blogs daily and more than 18 updates every second. And blogging has certainly arrived in the nonprofit sector. According to Technorati, more than 10,500 of these blogs are tagged with the term “charity,” while more than 4,000 are tagged “nonprofit,” and close to 2,300 are tagged “philanthropy.”"

Czechs are the first to make charitable gifts by text message - 18-01-2007 - Radio Prague

Czechs are the first to make charitable gifts by text message - 18-01-2007 - Radio Prague: "Czechs are the first to make charitable gifts by text message
[18-01-2007] By Ilya Marritz

Like most small nations, Czechs are proud of their inventions. Pilsner beer, the word 'robot' and even the soft contact lens are some of the contributions made to world culture and science by Czechs. A more recent technological innovation, the DMS, or Donors Message Service, is a big success inside the Czech Republic, and the inventors think it will soon catch on elsewhere too.
Last year, Czechs gave 38 million crowns, or about 1.7 million dollars to a variety of non-profit and charitable groups, just by hitting SEND on their mobile phones. No licking envelopes, no reading credit card numbers over the phone.
Veronika Bruhova is project coordinator of the donor's message service at the Czech Donors Forum. She says the DMS, really just a variant on the SMS or text message, is the most technologically-advanced way to make a charitable gift."

Spying for fun and nonprofits - The Boston Globe

Spying for fun and nonprofits - The Boston Globe: "Spying for fun and nonprofits

By Alex Beam, Globe Columnist | January 15, 2007

Last fall I was working on a column about National Public Radio and asked their spokeswoman for their most recent Internal Revenue Service Form 990. That is a report filed by all US nonprofit corporations -- schools, foundations, and even private clubs -- that provides details about their operations. I had heard there was a kerfuffle about high newsreaders' salaries at NPR."

PolicyLink - E-Advocacy -- Overview

PolicyLink - E-Advocacy -- Overview: "Advocacy is essential for anyone working to ensure that this nation’s resources are shared by everyone. The struggle may be for housing that’s affordable to people of all incomes, secure jobs and accessible transportation to reach them, or healthy communities with clean air, parks, and supermarkets that offer quality food and produce. Whatever it may be, we, the people, have the right to take action when our rights are threatened or denied.

Now more than ever, people are coming together—in coalitions or organizations—to harness the power of technology for policy change. This new Internet-based approach to advocacy—electronic advocacy (e-advocacy)—is a multifaceted process that uses an array of technology tools, tailored to specific campaign goals."

Beth's Blog: Cross Blog Discussion: NpTech Tag

Beth Kanter has some interesting discussion from a variety of folks using the NPTECH tag on her blog.
My short answers to her questions(See Below) are as follows
1. We use the NPTech tag to highlight news articles that we've seen that would also fit the evolving criteria for our AFP Nonprofit Technology News Blog.
2. Yes we subscribe to the feed to find resources and also to network. We would not however post the feed itself but instead use it as a winnowing device via our aggregator with the additional step of "human" filter.

3. Yes we read the summaries as well as selected posts. To date we skim the postings as opposed to sub searching( not sure if this is a real term) the tag.

4. We tag for both promotion and outreach. As a more general comment we also tag to categorize for future retrival (cataloging) of the material by topic. We find ourselves regularly challenged by the quandry of "broad" vs. "specific" tagging.

Thanks for the ongoing discussion.
Feel free to comment.

Beth's Blog: Cross Blog Discussion: NpTech Tag: "For a
n experiment, here's some conversation questions about the NpTech Tag. Write a blog post reflecting on these questions and tag it with NpTech and we will summarize the key points.

* How are you using the NpTech Tag?
* Do you subscribe to the feed to find resources?
* Do you read the summaries?
* Do you tag items with the NpTech as a form of promotion or outreach?"

WASHINGTON - In any given year, many regions of the world need help with famine, floods and other catastrophes. Most of these are largely forgotten, however, when high-profile disasters like tsunamis and hurricanes grab world attention.

The D.C.-based U.N. Foundation, established by a $1 billion donation in September 1997 by CNN founder Ted Turner, is forging a series of innovative partnerships to bring technology to bear on the needs of these hard hit areas."

Beth Kanter discusses Sharing foundations Charity Badge win.

Sharing Foundation Wins Network for Good Charity Badge/Yahoo Competition!!! | BlogHer: "Sharing Foundation Wins Network for Good Charity Badge/Yahoo Competition!!!
By Beth Kanter, 7:20 pm, Tue 2 Jan 2007

This New Year's Eve I didn't watch the ball drop on Times Square because I was glued to my laptop helping my favorite cause, the Sharing Foundation, raise almost $100,000 via my blog!

Three weeks ago, using what I learned from my first personal fundraising campaign, I launched a second campaign to raise money for the Sharing Foundation education programs using the Network For Good Charity Badge and entering the Yahoo! For Good competition which would double the amount raised by the winner."

Cheap laptops for Third World schoolchildren - CNN.com

Cheap laptops for Third World schoolchildren - CNN.com: "CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (AP) -- Forget windows, folders and boxes that pop up with text. When students in Thailand, Libya and other developing countries get their $150 computers from the One Laptop Per Child project in 2007, their experience will be unlike anything on standard PCs.

For most of these children the XO machine, as it's called, likely will be the first computer they've ever used. Because the students have no expectations for what PCs should be like, the laptop's creators started from scratch in designing a user interface they figured would be intuitive for children."

The Seattle Times: Business & Technology: No vaccine available yet for virulent Mouse Rage

The Seattle Times: Business & Technology: No vaccine available yet for virulent Mouse Rage: "According to a study of 2,500 Web users, released Tuesday, these symptoms affect all Internet users sooner or later.

The primary cause of Mouse Rage is 'badly designed and hosted Web sites,' the research center said. That includes slow-loading pages, layouts that are difficult to navigate, pesky pop-ups and unnecessary ads, including banners."
