Groups offer ringtones with a statement

Groups offer ringtones with a statement: "Take for example the efforts of U2 front man Bono. He got thousands of people to sign up for the ONE Campaign, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting global AIDS and poverty, by asking fans to send a text message during the band's concerts.

Amnesty International also uses text messaging to send action notices to members around the world.

Katrin Verclas, executive director of the Nonprofit Technology Network and a coordinator with MobileActive.org, said there's a lot to be learned as campaigns -- both political and social -- try new ways to connect with people."

eBay - The Chatter - eBay Giving Works' 10,000 Nonprofit - And a Cool Listing: "eBay Giving Works' 10,000 Nonprofit - And a Cool Listing

Posted by Jeff on February 21, 2007 at 09:39 AM in General , eBay in Pop Culture | Permalink

Jeff_post_128 Hopefully you saw the good news from Kristin Cunningham posted on the Announcement Givingworks Board - eBay Giving Works, our program for charity listings, recently added their 10,000th nonprofit to their directory. That's a lot of organizations sellers can choose to support - and it's even blown the folks running eBay Giving Works away. Jen Ibarra, who is a key player in making Giving Works hum (and who you saw expressing her fondness for Matthew McConaughey earlier in this video about National Philanthropy Day), told me, 'We're extremely excited. Honestly, at this point we would've been thrilled to have 5000 nonprofits signed up. To have twice that many is, well, mind-blowing.'"

Understanding Images: A Guide to Color Formats

Understanding Images: A Guide to Color Formats: "Understanding Images: A Guide to Color Formats
Choose the right color for your Web or print project

By: Brian Satterfield

February 8, 2007

Why does the color of your nonprofit's logo never look the same on the Web as it does in print? Is there a difference between CMYK and RGB? What does your printer mean when she talks about two-color versus four-color printing? And why on earth is your designer discussing 'PMS' with you?

For something you learned about in kindergarten, color can seem like an awfully complex subject when it comes to print and Web design. Rather than a simple aesthetic decision, choosing the best color for a print or Web project often means matching the right color format to the right graphics software, and even (in the case of print design) to the right paper and printer."

Submitted by Jason Z. on Tue, 2007-02-13 11:06. management | nptech | rss | tipsheet

It's come to the point where nonprofit staff who aren't using RSS aren't really doing all of their job.

I know. I know.

You don't believe me, and you don't care.

You already use the Internet, so why take time you don't have to learn some new way to get the information you already get? Especially when the first thing an evangelist says about RSS is that it's actually like 11 different data formats and nobody can even agree what the acronym means?"

Image and Data Manager: "Australian Search Engine for Charity

February 7, 2007: An Australian search engine dedicated to Australian based results says users can now donate to their charity of choice, simply by searching the internet.

Lookle was started up in 2001 under the parent umbrella of Australian Flourish. Dedicated to Australian websites, the engine predominantly feeds off Yahoo! yet provides its own unique look and feel for regular search activity.

But after a slow start-up, the search engine has now developed a donation system where one cent goes to a user’s charity of choice for every search undertaken. Considering the volume of search activity undertaken on the internet, Lookle says regular searches could turn into thousands of dollars for charities."

Will Tagging Replace The Dewey Decimal System?

Will Tagging Replace The Dewey Decimal System?: "I've long held the view that while tagging can be useful for improving some types of searches, tagging also has problems that can inject noise or ambiguity and actually muddy search results. Nonetheless, tagging is clearly not a fad, and it may even eventually replace hierarchal indexing systems used by most libraries, according to new research by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. According to the study, 28% of internet users have tagged or categorized content online such as photos, news stories or blog posts. On a typical day online, 7% of internet users say they tag or categorize online content. And tagging sites like Flickr and Del.icio.us are gaining in popularity, and are increasingly valuable as a source of traffic referrals for search marketers."

BlogBaud.com - A Nonprofit Blog Powered by Blackbaud Employees: "t’s February 1st - have you updated your Web site’s copyright date yet?

If you haven’t, you’re not alone. Forgetting to update is commonplace, and I see it all the time. Data was needed, so yesterday I checked out the top 100 nonprofits. What I found was shocking.

I expected a few would have forgotten, but not 34%. I even saw a few that still were listed as 2005 - wow! But don’t feel bad - the top 100 for-profits didn’t fair much better, with 18% forgetting to update.

Are you still reading? Have you checked your site yet?"

A one-line patch to the U.S. Code would make open source software a charitable deduction

By John S. Irons, Carl Malamud

February 1, 2007

The U.S. Code is the operating system of our system of government, the line-by-line instructions that govern our federal government. The code contains provisions for pretty much everything you can think of and lots of stuff that causes wonderment about its inclusion."
