Google, Local Platforms Respond to Japan's 8.9 Earthquake Crisis | Fast Company: "An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 hit Japan today, resulting in tsunami warnings for 20 countries, as well as California and Hawaii. Crisis mappers wasted no time responding: In under 2.5 hours Google launched its person finder application, which was also used when New Zealand's 6.3 quake struck last month, and a local developer in Tokyo, Shu Sigashi, a member of the OpenStreetMap Foundation in Japan, quickly put up a localized Ushahidi crisis platform."

NPR Scandal Explodes Plans for New Social Media Campaign | Fast Company: "Before the manufactured scandal, Fast Company had learned that NPR was about to ramp up a sophisticated social media strategy to rally their politically-savvy audience, including efforts at many of its nearly 800 local affiliates, roughly three months after it soft launched its campaign with a Facebook group, '170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting' (named after the purported number of Americans who use 'public media'). An official hashtag was already loaded into the firing chamber. (NPR has since declined to elaborate further on the next phase of its social media campaign)."

Red Cross Tweeting Has A ‘Sheen’ To It- The NonProfit Times MAR 9, 2011: "With seemingly the entire nation transfixed on the misadventures and public scorched earth policy of actor Charlie Sheen, the American Red Cross (ARC) has capitalized on his Internet meme of the Twitter hashtag #tigerblood, propelling the charity into the middle of the condemnation of the television star.

On March 2, the official Twitter account of the ARC tweeted, “We may not collect #tigerblood, but we know our donors & volunteers have a fierce passion for doing good! #RedCrossMonth.” Topping the trending topics section of Twitter, the tweet was quickly retweeted by more than 100 people and is now the third result when you click the hashtag “#tigerblood.”"
