Going digital: what charity leaders can learn from tech startups | Voluntary Sector Network | The Guardian

Going digital: what charity leaders can learn from tech startups | Voluntary Sector Network | The Guardian: "Charities are full of good and bright people with tons of ideas, but when it comes to creating digital products, are they the right people? Probably not.

A series of well documented digital fails, the latest of those being the well meaning but poorly executed Samaritans app, Radar, seem to support this. In 2012 Nesta launched a £17.6m Impact Investment fund and of the seven investments made to date, none have been in charities. Not a single one. While some may argue this is because charities lack money and resources, I am afraid I disagree. "

How To Donate Bitcoin To Charity And Get A Big Tax Deduction

How To Donate Bitcoin To Charity And Get A Big Tax Deduction: "Along with the growing popularity of Bitcoin,  the number of charitable organizations that accept virtual currencies has been growing. At the same time, so has government scrutiny, creating uncertainty about the continuing value of Bitcoin, Ripple, Litecoin,  and other, smaller currencies.  In March, the Internal  Revenue Service issued its long awaited opinion on the taxation of virtual currencies, ruling they should be treated as property, not currency.  That creates administrative and paperwork problems for those using Bitcoin, but also allows donors to obtain generous charitable income tax deductions for donating Bitcoin that is worth more than they paid for it, just as they do for giving appreciated stock to charity."

#GivingTuesday is over, now what? | Business Doing Good

#GivingTuesday is over, now what? | Business Doing Good: "eep breath.  #GivingTuesday is a week behind us – but the glow continues!

What a wonderful day it was — December 2nd — with people around the world showing how much they cared about giving back.  They gave money, time, their voices, their all.  And I’m proud that the company where I work was a part of that.  How much good was done?  We’ll actually never know because there’s simply no way to quantify all the good.  What we do know is how much was given online that day, processed by Blackbaud, as a proxy for how much giving has increased year over year. "

Don’t get bogged down in data « Philanthropy North Carolina

Don’t get bogged down in data « Philanthropy North Carolina: "nonprofit and philanthropy professionals love data, maybe too much.

Numbers, used sparingly, can help explain a community need, measure how a charitable program is helping to address it, and show donors and funders the return on their investment in the program.

But while data can be a useful means to the end of fixing problems, many people working in the charitable world seem to let data drive their thinking, decision-making, programs and funding, as well as their appeals to donors."

Giving Tuesday a day to give back - Philly.com

More opinions around Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday a day to give back - Philly.com: "Not everyone supports Giving Tuesday.

Laura Otten, executive director of the Nonprofit Center at La Salle University, said Giving Tuesday "flies in the face of good philanthropy," which depends on cultivating enduring relationships with donors over a long period of time - not on a quick-hit appeal.

Giving shouldn't be a one-day effort, but an ongoing flow based on mutual trust, Otten said. And, she added, giving "shouldn't be about assuaging guilt for spending too much on Black Friday."

Katherina Rosqueta, executive director of the Center for High Impact Philanthropy at the University of Pennsylvania, said some believe that dedicating a single day to giving risks so-called donor fatigue. That's when people who are typically solicited for money feel over-asked.

Perhaps, then, Giving Tuesday could be "a day to thank the folks who've "

The attorney general cites the charity for being in violation of The Charleston Principles, a set of guidelines issued in 2001 by the National Association of State Charity Officials (NASCO), which 39 states and the District of Columbia rely on, to varying degrees, when governing online charitable solicitations.

Millions of consumers recently lined-up for the latest iPhone that will be out of date within six months, yet the Charleston Principles, which target technology, have not been updated since being drafted in 1999 and issued in 2001."

How Small Organizations Can Use Affordable ICT-tools to Measure Impact | NTEN: "What if nonprofits and social enterprises had an affordable way to report real-time, large-scale data on their social impact? This question inspired Kopernik to create the "impact tracker technologies’" catalog in online and print forms.

Organizations are under pressure to measure their performance and results. Many low-cost, information communication technology (ICT) -based tools already exist to help collect data on a large-scale, real-time basis. Yet, while both supply and demand for ICT-based tools exist, nonprofits and social enterprises often fail to take advantage of them."

Taking Annual Reports Digital – Redesigning Good - Blogs - The Chronicle of Philanthropy: "Digital annual reports have many advantages over print versions: They can be cheaper to produce, and they allow charities to use video, interactive features, and dynamic data visualization. Using digital technology, charities can track how many people actually open the reports and what pages are most popular.

And with advances in content-management systems, like WordPress, employees with little or no web-development knowledge can dramatically change the look and feel of digital reports, so you don’t need a design or development staff to do it."

What Apple’s iPhone 6 and Watch mean for Nonprofits | Nonprofit Nate

Unless you hid under a rock yesterday, you heard about the big  Apple event.  I’m not going to get into the tech details, but watchingthe event last night did spark a few things to consider…

Bitcoin: how the charity RNLI is using the digital currency

Why did RNLI decide to use Bitcoins?
The idea came from our research into future trends and changes that may impact on the RNLI. Basically, it looked likely that we would receive digital currency as a donation and/or as part of a legacy at some point and we wanted to be prepared for that eventuality. While researching, we became aware that using Bitcoin could expose the RNLI to new audiences.

Could The IRS Disallow Ice Bucket Challenge Charitable Contributions?

Could The IRS Disallow Ice Bucket Challenge Charitable Contributions?

OK, rest easy; the IRS isn’t coming after your ALS donation. While the
principle of donative intent is very real, in recent years, the courts
have tied this principle to a “quid pro quo test,” which states that in
order for a donation to lack donative intent, the donor must anticipate
receiving a financial benefit from the contribution commensurate
with the value the donor transferred to the charity. Because an ice
bucket dodger has received no financial benefit, but rather merely a
physical one, the contribution is (should be) immune to attack. Plus, I
think I’ve read somewhere that the IRS is dealing with a bit of a public
perception problem these days, so attacking contributions to a horrible
disease is probably not in its best interest.

The Ice Bucket Challenge Won’t Solve Charity’s Biggest Problem - Dan Pallotta - Harvard Business Review

So, are we looking at the future of charity? We are glimpsing the
potential of momentary collective engagement, but at the same time, we
are seeing the confining rules by which nonprofits must play,
collectively imprisoned in an ancient way of thinking. The ALS
Association is already being scrutinized to make sure it doesn’t spend a
penny of the Ice Bucket money on anything but research. So when the
enthusiasm fades, there will be nothing there to replace it, because
investment in the replacement was forbidden.

A Drop In the Ice Bucket: Good for the Cause, Bad for the Drought

A Drop In the Ice Bucket: Good for the Cause, Bad for the Drought: o put the waste this campaign has caused into simple terms, let’s just assume everyone is using a five gallon bucket. Now multiply that number by the more than 1.2 million videos shared on Facebook since June 1. Based on that assumption (5 x 1,200,000), over 6 million gallons of water have been poured out in the name of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The average American household uses 320 gallons per day, which means that based on this estimation, nearly 19,000 homes’ daily water usage has been wasted. And that’s not even taking into account that videos posted online often depict multiple people, sometimes even entire sororities or fraternities, taking part in the ice bucket challenge, often using more than one bucket per video.

The AFP Blog: Obviously, the campaign is a success, but at the same time let’s not make more of this than it is.
