TORONTO (CP) - BlackBerry users could slowly start to receive a backlog of e-mails this morning as the company tries to return its servers to normal after an outage brought them to a screeching halt.

A massive system failure blocked BlackBerry e-mail for about eight million users in the Western Hemisphere, though as of midmorning on Wednesday, Waterloo, Ont.-based Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) remained publicly silent about the problem.

Some users on BlackBerry forums said they were starting to see signs of life on their devices as e-mails sent last night began to pour in. But most were still waiting.

And as of 9 a.m. ET, The firm's customer support centre, at 1-877-255-2377, carried a brief recorded message reporting a 'service interruption' causing delays in e-mail transmission."

BlackBerry users could find their devices eerily silent Wednesday morning.

A massive system failure at Waterloo, Ont.-based Research in Motion - the company behind the hand-held tools - is affecting users across the Western Hemisphere. The outage, which occurred at about 8pm Tuesday, means users may not be receiving any emails.

According to published reports, messages aren't being successfully sent to the mobile devices."

Nothing really polishes a podcast more than background music or theme music. In the music world, these music segments are referred to as intros and extros. While many enjoy streaming Internet Audio and recording songs they like over the Internet, these songs cannot legally be used in a podcast.

As many emergency workers know, not all Internet maps are created equal.

Web-based locator maps are good for approximate locations, but they don't always deliver absolute accuracy, mapping experts say.

That means police and other emergency response workers can waste valuable time looking for an exact address.

Austin's First American Flood Data Services says it has the answer to the problem — a huge database of millions of property parcels across the country."

I recently had the pleasure of giving a talk to some local nonprofits who were getting awards because of how well they'd integrated technology into the way the fulfilled their missions. These were smart, savvy folks working at a real grass-roots level. All were struggling with balancing the promise of the Internet and what it could bring to their organizations with the realities of accomplishing their work on budgets that were probably smaller than the monthly coffee expenditures at many of the clients we work with."

Nonprofits can gain from search: SES: "Search is an underutilized marketing channel that could be used to drive donations to nonprofits, according to a panel Friday at the Search Engine Strategies Conference & Expo.

At the session called “SEM for Non-Profits and Charities,” executives from nonprofit marketing agencies discussed the opportunities that many nonprofits miss by not developing good search campaigns. An important thing to consider is the landing page, for example."

Responsibility is in their sites / Web entrepreneurs have an eye on social need -- not personal greed: "In some senses, these entrepreneurs are fusing '60s consciousness and activism with '80s market savvy. In the process, they are creating a hybrid which is the best of those polar opposites,' said Paul Frankel, an investor who lectures on social entrepreneurship at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

The practice has precedent. EBay founder Pierre Omidyar has dedicated much of his fortune to helping for-profits and nonprofits alike discover their power to do good. And Google has evolved a novel brand of philanthropy, setting up a foundation without tax-exempt status so it can invest in for-profit as well as nonprofit groups."
