Community Resource Network, a nonprofit organization set up a dozen years ago to provide discounted Internet services to Kansas City's nonprofit community, no longer will sell Internet access and Web-hosting after this year.

CRN is exiting those business lines to focus on software development, Executive Director Ken Ortbals said Wednesday. Gharbia is the creator of the Tunisian Prison Map -- an idea inspired by a New York Times interactive map charting murder locations in New York City. Gharbia turned the concept on its head: Instead of showing government figures on crime, he'd display where his former government was behaving criminally, imprisoning political dissidents for daring to speak out."

By Kay Bell • Bankrate.com

Even those with just a passing familiarity of the Bible know that 'for everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.'

Few, however, would have foreseen the opening verse of Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes as a premonition of ATMs in churches.

Marty Baker, lead pastor at Stevens Creek Community Church was among that small group keeping an eye on possible changes in how worshipers financially support their faiths. Three years ago, Baker decided it was the appropriate time for Stevens Creek to embrace electronic giving, and he created a company to produce ATM-like kiosks where congregants can use plastic to tithe."

How two orgs have built and maintained active, vibrant wikis

By: Brian Satterfield

December 8, 2006

As emerging Web 2.0 technologies continue to spread across the Internet, more people are becoming exposed to wikis, collaborative Web sites that allow users to create and edit online content without requiring extensive technical skills.

In early November, TechSoup hosted an online wiki event, where nonprofit techies came together to pool their knowledge and trade tips about using this new technology. Throughout this three-day event, a number of organizations shared stories about how their nonprofits are using wikis to work and communicate more effectively."

Topic Expert Opinion

Is your nonprofit technology savvy? Do you wonder how you can communicate your mission to your stakeholders more clearly than you do now? And, while you think about adding new technologies to communicate, can you afford to do so? In today’s “Expert Opinion”, Christine Litch suggests some low and no cost ways to increase your ability to communicate with others.

In the business world, technology is used for its competitive edge, to increase efficiency and cut costs. Although nonprofits do not have stockholders or owners to satisfy, they do have a “bottom line” to consider. If a nonprofit doesn’t meet its guidelines, stock will not plummet, but programs and services – and the populations they serve -- may suffer. Unlike their business counterparts, however, nonprofits have been slow to adopt new technologies, one of the biggest reasons being the perception that investment in technology is an unnecessary use of money."

Local nonprofits tap the power of YouTube

California Coastal Commission,City Council,Malibu Beaches: "Launched in late 2005 with an initial investment of $3.5 million, and recently purchased by the Internet giant, Google, for $1.65 billion, YouTube has afforded under-funded video artists and citizen journalists the opportunity to post their 'home videos' to a potential market of hundreds of millions of users.

And now, two local nonprofits have launched web campaigns on YouTube: the California Wildlife Center and the anti-LNG activists with Coastal Advocates.

Victoria Harris, spokeswoman for the California Wildlife Center, said the decision to tap YouTube was a function of economics: 'We are funded purely on private donations and YouTube is free.'"

How to Use MySpace to Raise Awareness

How to Use MySpace to Raise Awareness: "By: Eileen Cruz Coleman

November 27, 2006

Raising awareness is vital to the survival of most social benefit organizations. Your organization may be doing important and valuable work — but if no one knows you exist, you are missing out on the opportunity to meet, engage, and motivate others to take action on your behalf.

Unfortunately, because nonprofits have limited resources, they can face significant challenges when deciding how to get their message out to large numbers of people. They must continually answer the all-important question, 'How can we reach the most number of people in the most cost-effective way?'

Enter MySpace, one of the most popular social networks on the Web today."

When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit last year, credit unions responded. In fact the National Credit Union Foundation raised and distributed more than $3 million in the wake of Katrina alone.

So I was surprised to hear during today’s session on online philanthropy that virtually none of that $3 million was raised via the Internet.

The NCUF, through sponsoring a new website called cuaid.coop, is working to change that.

I’m very encouraged that this conversation is taking place before the next disaster occurs. I do believe the online philanthropy space is growing more competitive with products like ChipIn, but credit unions can and should leverage the power of the network (you know, the inherent not-for-profit, cooperative aspect that ties all credit unions together)."

Digital technology did not create 'the paperless society' that many had predicted, at least not yet, but it does have people communicating more than ever, according to a new assessment of the impact of information and communications technologies (ICTs).

The study, published today in the Connectedness Series, examines some of the expected outcomes expressed about the widespread use of ICTs in everyday life when these technologies were introduced, and shows that some of them have so far not materialized.

It finds that some of the key outcomes of ICTs are manifested in shifting behavioural patterns, including communication and spending. For example, patterns of communication are changing and people are talking on the phone and using email more than they ever have."

WASHINGTON - Although somewhat behind the curve, many local nonprofits are clueing in to the use of blogs as a way to reach out to younger donors and volunteers.

“It’s all been very recent,” said Marjorie Sims, vice president of programs and operations at The Women’s Foundation, a D.C.-based nonprofit working to increase the number of women that donate to charities.

The organization launched a redesigned Web site just last month that included a section for blogging. The page has already become the most popular one on the site, Sims said. Board members and Women’s Foundation staff blog about the organization’s fundraising efforts and female-focused issues, a strategy Sims hopes will bring unlikely donors to the table."

By: Dr. David Crooke, 11/02/06

Individuals in today’s workplace, whether nonprofit or for-profit, often make two common errors when thinking about privacy and information security.

First, people tend to think of information security as a technology problem — making it all about firewalls and encryption. Designing a truly secure information handling system instead requires a holistic approach that uses technology components, but first must address business processes, policies and most importantly, people. Many serious and successful hacking attempts begin with what hackers refer to as “social engineering” — they compromise the human components of the information system rather than the electronic ones."

Or, would you like to find out how much your Member of Congress is worth, or how many Members own stock in specific companies? Feel like checking out who's taken the most trips sponsored by private groups?

Three new databases, one built by OMB Watch and two built by the Center for Responsive Politics, have just gone live, and judging by the intense press interest in the launch, I think there's going to be a lot of new and interesting stories appearing soon. (Full disclosure: I am a consultant to the Sunlight Foundation, which funded these new databases, and helped with this launch.)"

One of Wikipedia's founders and closest critics is launching an alternative to the free online encyclopedia this week.

Larry Sanger, a co-founder of Wikipedia and the site's former editor-in-chief, is launching a rival site called Citizendium. It will include user registration and editorial controls to govern user-submitted articles, unlike the free-for-all submission process that reigns on Wikipedia. With 'gentle' controls in place, Sanger said Citizendium will naturally weed out so-called trolls from posting obscenities or biased information.

'Wikipedia is amazing. It has grown in breadth and depth, and the articles are remarkably good given the system that is in place. I merely think that we can do better,' Sanger said. 'There are a number of problems with the system that can be solved, and by solving those we can end up with an even better massive encyclopedia.'"

Stanford Social Innovation Review : Opinion Blog : All They Want Is Money (October 10, 2006): "t a recent conference, I did an informal survey of nonprofit professionals to see how many people visited nonprofit websites, other than for work, in the past 3 months (lots of hands)and how many planned to go back to those sites (very, very few). I asked, “Why don’t you go back to those sites?” “Because all they do is ask that I donate,” one guy said.

That is the state of most nonprofit websites--most engage users on only a superficial level. They rely on an information dump that ignores what the user wants to do and learn. A big “Donate” button on your homepage does not address the question of how to get that user motivated.

There are a couple of nonprofit sites that have woken up to this and really stand out for trying to spark intellectual and emotional engagement."

Ignoring the Internet is no longer an option for voluntary and community organisations, according to a new booklet ‘ICT, Social Capital and Voluntary Action’ published today by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

It warns that failing to embrace information and communications technology (ICT) risks having their work overshadowed by those who do draw on this new source of ‘social capital’ – the reserve of goodwill generated when people interact. And though local ICT initiatives are taking place, the booklet says that the smaller online communities they create need ongoing technical and funding support if they are to survive."

Blevins received a donated computer as an eighth-grader earlier this year, thanks to an initiative called 'No Child Left Offline,' which is aimed at closing the technology gap for tens of thousands of Kentucky students without home computers."

onPhilanthropy: 10 Ways to Use Web 2.0 to Change the World: "10 Ways to Use Web 2.0 to Change the World
By: Marnie Webb, 08/09/06

Here’s the thing: when nonprofit staff start thinking about using web-based tools, they often think about doing it themselves. About starting a blog. About making a section of their site dedicated to photos. About creating something where there was nothing.

That’s not really necessary. Sure, you can start a blog or put up a wiki and invite your volunteers to start editing your outreach materials. But there are a lot of things that you can do to tweak what you are already doing and use social tools to push you further along the rode of achieving your mission.

This is presented in order. I think of it as a progression. By the time you get to the end, the items will make more sense."

Interview with Terrance Gainer, director of emergency preparedness for the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington
When it comes to emergency preparedness, Terrance Gainer wants to get everyone on the same page. A key part of his job as director of emergency preparedness for the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington is to get non-profit organizations, such as hospitals, schools, charities and advocacy groups, in the Washington region working with local government. If another catastrophic incident such as Sept. 11, 2001, hits the region, the public and private sectors need to bring a synchronized, coordinated response.

Tallahassee Democrat - www.tallahassee.com - Tallahassee, FL.: "Web site helping to raise money for local nonprofits

By TaMaryn Waters
DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

Forget the car washes and bake sales. Raising money for your favorite charity is as easy as clicking your mouse.

That's the case for seven local nonprofit organizations that are innovating their approaches by using an increasingly popular Web site called GoodSearch. The Yahoo-powered search engine, which has attracted national attention from CNN, The Wall Street Journal and others, allows schools and charities to collect a penny every time someone designates them and then accesses the Internet through that site."

Who Gives What and Why: Noza Knows: "Who Gives What and Why: Noza Knows
by Barbara Quint
July 31, 2006 — Behind most of society’s happier moments, you will find the contributions of the generous. Funds from donors provide the resources that empower more than a million nonprofit organizations. To help these organizations find their power connections, a new database and search engine from Noza, LLC (http://www.nozasearch.com) offers more than 12 million separate records of charitable contributions and donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Craig Harris, CEO and founder of Noza, expects heavy use from established prospect researchers serving the 500,000 heavy hitter nonprofits, but he mainly hopes to serve the million smaller nonprofits needing prospects. Charges for the database operate on a declining scale with partial records available for free. All of the data in the system comes from open Web sources, according to Harris. “As of now,” Noza inputs no print data nor does it tap proprietary databases. However, the six resellers of Noza’s files do carry access to a range of proprietary files."

UK Fundraising | News | Why charities need to protect their data: "Why charities need to protect their data
by Jason Ashley, Senior Partner BEW Global
27 Jul 2006

Jason Ashley, Senior Partner at IT security company BEW Global, explains why charities need to focus even more on protecting their data. He offers suggestions on how to protect data in motion and data at rest.

The rise in data security breaches and trade secret piracy over the past year is a wake-up call for executives - network security is not enough for charities. Incredibly, 1 in 400 messages leaving a company contains confidential data, and one in 50 files on open share (a folder where anyone on the network can add, delete or change files, without needing a username and password) is exposed.

I believe that the threat poised internally is just as great as at the perimeter."

By: Tom Watson, 07/26/06

Soaring mountains, shimmering seas, futuristic buildings, strange vehicles flying in the air. And throughout the fantastic landscape, three-dimensional avatars walk and fly and talk - and spend a new and very real form of currency. Welcome to Second Life, a fast-growing virtual reality community where users from around the world gather to live out their fantasies and assume personas they never could in the terrestrial world. The virtual world was created by a real-world company, Linden Labs, in 2003 and now numbers some 200,000 members who spend hundreds of thousands a day in 'Linden dollars,' the game's currency. They buy land and buildings (all virtual of course), clothing and accessories, movies, vehicles, and music.

And more and more, they give money away. Real money to real charities."

Building a Web Site

Building a Web Site: "BUILDING A WEB SITE
Start with the basics, take it in stages, work up to the complex

Development of a web site is a logical process, which should work through from such basic questions as who’s in charge/who’s paying/what is the nature of the audience/how do we attract the audience to the site, to complex questions of adding some of the 'tomorrow' elements of technology ... after all the ducks are neatly in their row.

So says Marden Paul, Director of Strategic Computing, Office of the Vice-President and Provost, University of Toronto. And he should know, being in charge of one of the web’s more interesting and complex sites, which recently had a makeover.

Speaking to Fundraising Day of the Greater Toronto Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Paul notes that having got the who-are-we and who-are-we-talking-to questions out of the way, the next step is to develop a set of principles to guide the design and architecture of the site – how its information is to be organized and what information is to be included/excluded."

A five person IT staff with five iSeries [recently renamed System i] boxes help Catholic Charities in St. Paul and Minneapolis serve 1.1 million meals to the hungry each year and provide 1,000 beds per night for the homeless.

Catholic Charities' IT department supports a CommunityCard program, using Lotus running on an iSeries. The program helps identify and keep track of the thousands of homeless that Catholic Charities serves each year. Each time a homeless person steps through its doors, they either show their identification card or, if they haven't been there before, are issued one."

Scripps Howard News Service-Non-voice way to communicate popular with young people

Scripps Howard News Service: "Text messaging has evolved into a powerful non-voice form of communication for cell phone users, especially younger subscribers who love to trade short notes and updates. The practice has grown in just a few years to the point where more than one-third of cell phone users regularly send and receive text messages, most of them personal.

Now businesses, governments and nonprofit groups are increasingly finding it handy to provide a wide array of services and information.

In the process they are finding out that text messaging can reach an unusually large audience, is easy to use and offers an immediacy not found in voice calls, e-mail or instant messaging."

Are you having problems managing information about your organization’s donors, supporters, members, volunteers, and other constituents?

If so, you’re not alone. Many organizations struggle with the volume of information they’d like to track and the number of methods they use to track it. In a soon-to-be published survey by dotOrganize, over half the small- to medium-sized nonprofits who responded said they store information about contacts in more than four different places. In fact, 20% said they store it in more than ten places! Many of them use solutions that make it hard for the whole staff to access it – 58% used Excel, 52% used a personal contact manager like Outlook, and an alarming 55% reported using slips of paper."

That's partly because you needed a lot of money to pay a staff to run a foundation and provide the necessary back-office support to collect and monitor charitable donations.

But Daniel M. Schley saw the Internet as an opportunity to help families and other organizations with more moderate means to establish charitable funds. In 2000, Schley helped launch Foundation Source , a Fairfield, Conn.-based provider of support services for private foundations, including back-office systems and online assistance.

This spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in the world of open source software. Thousands of people donate their time and expertise to the benefit of all. Simon Webbe, former member of boy band Blue, joined soap stars Sheree Murphy and Shobna Gulati and GMTV weather presenter Claire Nasir to launch the new service.

Elaine Dodds, the NSPCC's head of corporate fundraising, said: 'All the best fundraising ideas are simple and this one really couldn't be simpler."

It’s a question you hear more and more from development professionals: “what about blogs?”

Truth is, the incredible phenomenon of Weblogging hasn’t really made its impact on wired fundraising known. There are signs that user-created content, RSS feeds, and the open nature of blogs will be an important development in philanthropy – more and more nonprofits publish blogs, for instance – but it’s hard to see the connection between giving and blogging.

Yet.

That’s why I believe it’s vital for wired fundraisers to be blog-savvy these days. As the Web moves into its next phase of rapid development – what some are calling “Web 2.0” – successful online fundraising and cultivation efforts will no doubt require some knowledge of the latest tools and new networks of users."

Topic Expert Opinion

As nonprofit organizations accumulate experience with planning and executing online programs, best practices are emerging — particularly in the area of online direct response fundraising. Likewise, technology advances in Internet marketing and fundraising are enabling more sophisticated approaches and, consequently, stronger results. Here’s a look at best practices and technologies that nonprofits can use to establish more effective direct response fundraising programs.

Building constituent email files

There is growing appreciation throughout the nonprofit sector for the importance of building constituent email files. Today's Internet savvy organizations realize that having a constituent's email address allows them to cultivate, motivate, mobilize and solicit constituents at nominal costs. They also realize that having an email address and communicating in an integrated fashion lifts donor value.

Afternic.com Facilitates $200,000 Sale of Domain Name Donated for Philanthropic Cause: "Entire Proceeds of Sale, Including Afternic.com Fee, Donated to the Boston Foundation

Leading domain-name exchange Afternic.com today announced facilitating a six-figure transaction in which the seller donated the entire proceeds to a major community foundation. The seller's philanthropic act, in turn, inspired Afternic.com to contribute its transaction fee to the foundation, as well.

In what is possibly a first-of-its-kind gift using an appreciated Internet moniker as currency, Tom Bird, a Massachusetts entrepreneur, donated the domain name Farm.com to The Boston Foundation, a 90-year old community foundation with $700 million in assets, after learning the value of the URL had soared since it was first registered in the 1990s."

By Louise Chatterton Luchuk
March 20, 2006

We truly are living in the electronic age, with vast quantities of information available at our fingertips. As much as we sometimes feel inundated with all of the offerings, we have also come to expect this instant and broad access. The cultural sector is responding by finding new ways to stay relevant and engage audiences. It's no longer just about visiting a public library to borrow a book, or sitting in a concert hall to hear a symphony, or wandering through a museum to find out about a community's history. Cultural institutions are learning to broaden their understanding of who they are and what they do. "

Oftentimes, the skepticism new technologies receive outweighs the excitement, especially when these new technologies are introduced to cash-strapped nonprofits. Questions such as can this make my job easier?- or can this help me communicate more effectively with my constituents? are usually preceded by how much does this cost? if they are asked at all. "
