Nonprofits losing United Way money scramble to fill void

Nonprofits losing United Way money scramble to fill void: "The 21 charities that will lose their United Way financing are trawling for dollars. They are turning to longtime contributors and contacting possible new ones, posting pleas on their Web sites, and sending e-mail blasts to thousands of supporters.

The Girl Scouts of Central Texas recently sent an e-mail appeal to 6,500 people. But it could be months before charities know whether their efforts are working."

What the Creative in 'Creative Commons' Really Means - News and Analysis by PC Magazine

What the Creative in 'Creative Commons' Really Means - News and Analysis by PC Magazine: "It gives creators who never went to law school the vocabulary they need to work through the copyright system,' says Vaidhyanathan. 'It lets creators understand that copyright is not one right; it's a bundle of rights. And that if you create a work, you have the ability to let the world use it in useful and beneficial ways.'

But the concept isn't all free love and file-sharing. Using Creative Commons licenses, content producers can release their work into the public domain, for anyone to cut up, mash up, or mark up. Or they can simply allow people to distribute it as a whole, without the ability to alter it. The other licenses fall somewhere in-between, but all require attribution, so creators get the credit they're due."

District Firm Razoo Joins Other Web Site Builders Trying to Reinvent How People Give Money to Charity

By Zachary A. Goldfarb
Washington Post Staff Writer

The office of Razoo on Connecticut Avenue blends two distinct cultures common in Washington.

It has the feeling of an Internet start-up, what with programmers clicking away, big flat screens, an espresso machine and funky green carpet. Yet the photos on the walls from Rwanda and other poor countries and the 11 employees, age 23 to 33, suggest it could just as easily be a nongovernmental organization."

FT.com / Partnership Publishing - Giving in the internet age: "Giving in the internet age By Sarah Murray Published: December 10 2007 17:26 | Last updated: December 10 2007 17:26 This year, some people will be receiving rather unusual Christmas presents. Among the gifts will be goats, condoms, agricultural fertiliser and schoolbooks. The gifts – which can be purchased on Oxfam Unwrapped, part of the UK-based charity’s website – are not delivered to the friends and family of the giver, but to needy communities in the developing world.

Oxfam Unwrapped is just one example of how the internet is changing philanthropy. Not only is it giving individual donors an easy means of sending money or gifts to remote parts of the world. The web allows the rapid spread of information about pressing social and environmental problems. Moreover, it is providing a forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas between charities and non-profit groups, facilitating a more “open source” approach to coming up with solutions to seemingly intractable problems."

JewishJournal.com: "Viral philanthropy, in contrast, allows the average individual to decide how to present the appeal to other Internet users. For instance, people can solicit donations through their blogs or their Change.org profiles, or download an application allowing them to join groups on Facebook.com intended to raise money for a particular cause. These e-philanthropists can also go to such sites as Networkforgood.org to create 'charity badges' that can be posted on Web sites, blogs or profiles on social networking sites. The badge displays a snippet of information about the charity, the amount of money raised and a tab to send a donation to the organization. But at this point, the buzz surrounding viral philanthropy is greater than the substance, said Michael Nilsen, director of public affairs for the Association of Fundraising Professionals: 'It's one of those things that are being talked about a lot.'"

Or simply more copyright woes? | Media Sphere - Josh Wolf blogs about the new information age - CNET Blogs: "When Creative Commons first surfaced, it was heralded as a means to share media without being ensnared by the complications accompanying traditional copyright. With six different licenses available, media creators were provided the opportunity to dial in the exact rights they wanted. Or at least that was the plan. In reality this bevy of choices has led to significant confusion and as CNN reports, 16 year-old Alison Chang recently learned her picture is being used for a Virgin Mobile ad campaign in Australia. She didn't give her permission, and it appears that the ads exploit confusion around Creative Commons."

Company Ban on Friday Internal E-mails Still Working

Company Ban on Friday Internal E-mails Still Working: "Company Ban on Friday Internal E-mails Still Working By Kathy Gurchiek Not sending or responding to internal e-mail may sound like crazy talk, but it’s a concept that continues to work more than a year after PBD Worldwide Fulfillment Services introduced “no e-mail Fridays” in June 2006. Part of that success is derived from forcing employees to call other employees or pay them a visit. “Once you get a personal connection with somebody, you don’t want to e-mail anymore,” said Lisa Williams, SPHR, PBD’s vice president of HR in Alpharetta, Ga. It started when Scott A. Dockter, the company’s CEO, became concerned that an over-dependence on e-mail was hurting the productivity, and perhaps sales, of the company’s storage and distribution service, which serves associations, nonprofits, educational publishers and faith-based groups."

You've probably also heard the Chicken Littles of the world describing how Web 2.0 could spell the demise of associations. They say that associations are being disintermediated from the very constituents they claim to represent by the evolution of social structures and networks which can now be supported by the Internet. Gift Hub: Omidyar.net Announces that their Site Will Close: "Omidyar.net Announces that their Site Will Close

Thomas Kreise:

In Spring 2004, Omidyar Network created a set of collaborative tools to facilitate our work as an organization. We found it useful, and a few months later in July 2004, we opened up access to the tool set to anyone and everyone working toward making the world a better place.

We chose the approach of a self-managed community in the hope people would find shared interests and discover their power to make good things happen. Indeed, in the three years since we opened the omidyar.net tool for external use, thousands of members have met, posted, discussed and collaborated in the many groups and discussions and workspace pages on omidyar.net. And while the connections may have been made here, the positive impact has spread to many other online communities as well as real world communities across the globe. Through several experimental and experiential collaborative funding projects, the omidyar.net community has directed thousands of dollars to organizations making good things happen around the world.

This summer, instead of deciding where to direct funding, omidyar.net members will decide how to migrate to other community platforms."

Why Nonprofit Managers Must Use RSS — And How to Start: "Why Nonprofit Managers Must Use RSS — And How to Start
Go from zero to RSS expert in three easy steps

By: Jason Zanon

This article originally appeared on the Web site DemocracyInAction.org, which provides affordable e-advocacy tools to other nonprofits.

It's come to the point where nonprofit staff who aren't using RSS aren't really doing all of their job.

I know, I know — you don't believe me, and you don't care.

You already use the Internet, so why take time you don't have to learn some new way to get the information you already get? Especially when the first thing an evangelist says about RSS is that it's actually like 11 different data formats and nobody can even agree what the acronym means?"

By Jennifer Gilomen
You’ve probably seen a lot of people in your field jumping onto the video bandwagon, producing everything from videoconferences to digital stories to podcasts. If you’re just getting started, you’ll find a dizzying array of formats and methods of distribution. But taking the first steps to producing and disseminating your own videos doesn’t have to be daunting; it just takes some solid identification of your goals, a prioritization of your audience(s), a reasonable assessment of the expenses involved, and a bit of training in the technology and practices of shooting and editing."

Queuers give their iPhone to charity, News at CNET.co.uk: "When David Clayman arrived in Manhattan last week, he had no idea he'd end up queuing for an iPhone.

Clayman, a soft-spoken, bespectacled 21-year-old, graduated from the University of Chicago earlier in June and decided to spend a few days touring the Big Apple before starting his job as a consultant at enterprise software company SAP. He was staying in a youth hostel, exploring the city, when he walked by the massive glass cube of the Fifth Avenue Apple Store on Monday and saw that the first person had already started queuing for the company's coveted iPhone.

'I'd heard about all the iPhone hype,' he said in a particularly wet interview outside the store during a break in Wednesday night's thunderstorms, 'and I realised that there was clearly going to be a lot of publicity.'"

Last fall our team spent time talking with philanthropies and other organizations with long histories of successful interventions in the field of global public health. Considering many ideas, we talked about what it will take to finally eradicate polio in the developing world, and the role that philanthropy can play. Many of our parents remember what it was like to have polio in this country, and a few people in the States still reside in iron lungs. These generations are advancing, and it's important that we not forget how horrible the crippling of polio can be to those who are at risk today."

Does online engagement help nonprofits raise money?

At first glance, this seems like a pretty straightforward question: engaging potential donors with your nonprofit’s mission is one of the most powerful cultivation tools you can employ, so it stands to reason that offering people a way to get involved through online advocacy, and keeping them informed with an online newsletter, would naturally garner more money for your organization."
