Exclusive: Foursquare's New Partnership With PepsiCo Takes Focus Off of Places | Fast Company: "Foursquare has also designed a unique vehicle for check-in rewards that is far less linear and ephemeral than traditional location-based reward programs. Rather than, say, earning a free coffee for becoming 'mayor' of Starbucks (or just giving away 10,000 pairs of free jeans like Facebook and Gap's one-off promo), Foursquare and PepsiCo have tailored rewards to user behavior, irrespective of in-store check-ins. Now, when participating customers earn Foursquare's 'Gym Rat' badge, they might be offered a SoBe Lifewater; or, if you often check in bright and early, Foursquare will recognize you're a morning person, and may offer Tropicana orange juice or Quaker Oats--all specials on PepsiCo products, redeemable at Safeway stores."

2010 Review of Not-For-Profit Accounting Systems — NEWS - The CPA Technology Advisor: "The software needs of the nonprofit organization are vastly different from those implemented by standard organizations. Many nonprofits are funded solely by grants, which require detailed tracking and accountability for every dollar spent. As well, those active in fundraising need a way to record donations, provide receipts and track donors for future fundraising campaigns."
Do Online Causes and Philanthropy Do Any Good? - San Francisco Music - All Shook Down
Do Online Causes and Philanthropy Do Any Good? - San Francisco Music - All Shook Down: "This is partially due to the mere fact that once an org has your information from Facebook Causes or MySpace Impact or Network for Good or what-have-you, then they can market to you directly, thus expanding their lists of potential donors and overall grasp on do-goodery. One recent example comes from my other, less drunk life at Mother Jones, where we raised $1,500 through Spot.us in a matter of days, to finance a reporter's trip to Haiti. All people had to do was fill out a survey, which is, I'm pretty sure, precisely what Martin Luther King envisioned for the future of humanity. Another, far less impressive and impactful Haiti fundraising example comes from The Chronicle of Philanthropy: 'In 48 hours, the American Red Cross raised $3-million for Haiti relief largely with the help of 2.3 million Twitter messages posted by Red Cross supporters.'

How Non-Profits are Exploring Augmented Reality Tech: "Augmented reality promises a new level of interaction between people and data. Now, even the newest for-profit applications can turn heads by utilizing this new advanced technology.
The non-profit sector has started to experiment with augmented reality. One of Sunlight Labs’ early entries is their Recovery.gov mashup. Another example is Amsterdam’s Allard Pierson Museum, which highlights virtual reconstructions of Satricum and the Forum Romanum. But while there are early leaders, non-profits generally lag behind in market experimentation."

In computers we trust?
In computers we trust?: "It happens all the time. You're feeling good — your funders are onboard; the programs you've been struggling with are finally in place — it seems you've got it under control. But then your colleague's nephew — you know the one, the computer geek everyone refers to as the 'whiz kid'— leaves town for a couple of months. All of a sudden the core of your operations has lost its footing, usurping your sense of confidence along with it."

I often wish that I could brief the vendors ahead of time about the language and culture of nonprofit organizations! Tanja Aitamurto: Nonprofits: Open Up Your Data, Become a Platform Organization: "Traditionally, nonprofits are closed organizations that function as a middleman between donors and beneficiaries. The organizations allocate the funds to the destinations that they decide to, and the donors support the organization, rather than a specific project. The beneficiaries and the donors are at the other ends of the chain - there is hardly any contact between those two ends."

The news about a revamp to MySpace's profile pages first came via a tweet from a MySpace executive, but then MySpace confirmed it via a short statement: 'We're testing a new look and feel of our site among users' it noted, adding that clients seemed to like the changes thus far. 'As always, we're interested in hearing feedback from our community as we roll out enhancements to the user experience and look forward to sharing more details with you in the coming weeks' is a much more exciting phrase to read, though, as it points to a more thorough revamp en route."

I realized it was the online communities and supporter relationships I was concerned about damaging. It wasn’t the inconvenience of not being able to perform my normal day-to-day tasks that bothered me (although that was frustrating). I’ve got a system to respond and monitor community discussions and comments regarding organizations I work with down to a science, and I’ve worked hard to make it efficient. Without my tools, my system gets more complicated and speed of response is left wanting."

Book Review: The Networked Nonprofit | onPhilanthropy
Book Review: The Networked Nonprofit | onPhilanthropy: "In my consulting work, I meet plenty of nonprofit leaders – development directors, board members, executive directors – who know they want to open their organizations to social media but lack the right blueprint. It’s my job to provide it, of course. Weinstein's allthis.com is, according to the Mercury News, 'a kind of eBay for charity.' At allthis.com, benefactors list unusual services for auction, with the proceeds going to the charity of their choice. Bidding opportunities include an offer from comedian Ben Stiller to record your phone's voice mail greeting, to a dinner date with former Playboy model Christina DeRosa."

Inhabiting a Social Media Territory – Engage365: "Having a primary channel on the social Web where you focus your existence is often referred to as a social media hub. (June 8, 2010) It's easy to get caught up in the digital hype. We're now used to hearing terms like click through's and impressions as frequently as response rates and average gifts.
Surely there's enough data now to finally forego four page letters and move across completely to the online space. Perhaps it's time to acknowledge the direct mail doomsayers are right after all."
