CharityVillage Research: Game On: Charities Toy with New Ideas for Online Engagement: You’ve may have noticed that the concept of "Gamification” is a hot topic in the technology community. What is it really, and what does it mean for charities and nonprofits?

Gamified experiences use game-playing techniques to engage users and encourage specific activities. A typical example of gamification might involve gathering reward points, achieving increasingly higher levels, or solving puzzles to unlock new challenges. One well-known example is the geo-location application Foursquare, where users earn badges and virtual rewards for "check-ins” online. Some charities have joined the trend by partnering with a corporate sponsor to co-brand a web or mobile game, or by building their own. Advocacy, raising awareness, and membership-building are only a few of the possible social good objectives for games like these.

Online Community Managers: When Community Should Be About You — Kommein

Online Community Managers: When Community Should Be About You — Kommein: I recently wrote a well-received post about how online communities are about the members and not about the community manager. Indeed, the best community managers make sure their communities are front and center and don’t turn their online groups into ego projects. It’s easy to use words like “I” and “my” because we’re so possessive and proud when it comes to our online communities, especially if we grew said communities from scratch. However, it’s not about us, it’s about them.

The report shows that 71 percent of respondents stated that they used an organizationwide database, which is interesting because almost 80 percent said that they thought a dedicated, fundraising-specific database software would have greater capabilities.

It's a powerful example of how social media can make lasting, life-saving change--not just for one man, but for an entire population in need of bone marrow.

It's not hard to see why Gupta's story initially took off; a longtime Internet entrepreneur, he is well-connected (and well-liked) in the social media scene. Gupta originally posted the news about his lack of potential bone marrow matches, but he had no idea how big his story would become.

Podcasting as Digital Storytelling: Behind the Scenes Look | NTEN: f course, in its most rudimentary form, a podcast is simply a digital audio recording delivered to listeners who can hear it at their convenience. But a podcast can be a vehicle for storytelling, if you make the effort to infuse it with a narrative.

In the case of the “askDeborah podcast,” the narrative began even before the recording sessions. After the CTK team and I had compiled a list of frequently asked nonprofit technology questions, I started emailing and calling some of my favorite colleagues. I'd explain, “It's sort of like Car Talk, except that I'm not two Italian-American brothers. But real nonprofit professionals will submit real questions about their technology challenges. Web the new frontier for activism - CNN.com

Web the new frontier for activism - CNN.com: I had been skeptical of social networking and didn't have a compelling personal reason to use it. So if you told me two years ago I'd be writing this op-ed, I'd have told you that you were nuts. But that marathon campaign changed my mind. People started coming to us for tips on how to recreate our success. We realized that what we had engineered was out of the reach of most individuals and many nonprofits.

So my partners and I launched CrowdRise. Now, everyone can create "Charitable Life," a personal Web page dedicated to raising money for good causes, in about 60 seconds. Site users can ask people in their own networks to support the cause. It works because people want to help their friends and they want to have fun doing it. Also, it's massively more efficient in cost and labor than traditional fundraising efforts.

Facebook Updates Could Give Nonprofits Better Visibility - Social Philanthropy - The Chronicle of Philanthropy- Connecting the nonprofit world with news, jobs, and ideas

Facebook Updates Could Give Nonprofits Better Visibility - Social Philanthropy - The Chronicle of Philanthropy- Connecting the nonprofit world with news, jobs, and ideas: “The challenge is that high-value actions like donating and sharing video content ends up being drowned out by a large volume off really lightweight games,” says Mr. Mahan.

Facebook hopes to reduce the problem by using formulas to decide what appears on a person’s timeline, grouping similar activities into “reports” while relegating less important but higher-frequency items to a separate feed.

This is expected to help nonprofits stand out more. Mr. Mahan says that when someone donates to a charity through Causes, he or she can make that action prominent for a long time.

A Social Revolution: How New Media is Changing Nonprofits

A Social Revolution: How New Media is Changing Nonprofits: Twenty years ago, email was a new phenomenon that revolutionized the way we communicate, but today even email is sometimes considered archaic: Canadians are world leaders in the use of social media with 79% of Canadians saying they use social media with half of them visiting sites such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube daily.

Just as electronic communication altered how we interact with the world, so the use of social and digital media is changing how most nonprofit organizations communicate with their constituencies, and even creating shifts in how the organizations work. We talked with several Canadian nonprofit organizations to understand the impact of social media on how they operate and communicate.

Keep them up if you emphasize the first of those two words over the second — non-profit rather than theater — when you think about the nature of your work.

Most of us, I suspect, prefer to focus on the fact that we make art and share it with the world, rather than the fact that we run non-profits. But we do, and we face all of the challenges any non-profit faces, from raising money to serving our constituencies to supporting our staff members as much as we can.

ConvioIntegrated multi-channel marketing makes the most sense for non-profit organizations, but size does not equal integrated marketing sophistication among organizations, according to the Integrated Multi-Channel Marketing study from Convio Inc. (Nasdaq:CNVO).

“Today, every constituent can and should be engaged through multiple channels so that both the organization and the individual get the most out of the relationship,” said Vinay Bhagat, founder and chief strategy officer of Convio. “In doing so, nonprofits can deepen those relationships by better anticipating needs, interests and passions, and providing relevant interactions and opportunities for participation. Determining how to manage this within an organization is non-trivial but has significant payoffs."

Whether it's one nonprofit partnering with a like-minded organization to tackle a common issue, or combining individual efforts on a project team, working collaboratively can be an effective means to find efficient solutions.

With technological advances happening at such a rapid pace, collaboration is quickly taking a virtual bent. Is your organization taking full advantage of the opportunities available?"

Digital Oxytocin: How Trust Keeps Facebook, Twitter Humming | Fast Company

Digital Oxytocin: How Trust Keeps Facebook, Twitter Humming | Fast Company: "The most surprising takeaway from the recent Pew Research Center study, 'Social Networking Sites and Our Lives,' wasn't that 80% of Americans regularly use the Internet or that 60% of Web users have a social network account--double the number in 2008, with the vast majority on Facebook (52%) and Twitter (33%). Nor is it that people have gone gaga over smartphones, with one in three Americans owning one. Rather, it's the idea that the Internet, in particular social networks, engender trust, and the more time you spend on them the more trusting you become."

Facebook: Is it Worth your Nonprofit’s Time? | NetWitsThinkTank.com: "This is a guest post by the one and only Allyson Kapin - co-founder of Rad Campaign. Make sure to check out what she’s got going on!

How much time should your nonprofit spend engaging with their “fans” on Facebook?

Is two hours a week good enough? Or will nonprofit campaigners who spend eight hours a week on their FB fanpage see better results such as more actions taken on campaigns and increased donations? Idealware who surveyed over 500 nonprofit staff members about their Facebook usage and goals may have answers to some of the questions organizations have been seeking. Their recent report provides great insight into how nonprofits are benefitting (or not) from Facebook."

HOW TO: Tweet for an International Audience Nonprofit Tech 2.0 Blog :: A Social Media Guide for Nonprofits: "Obviously nonprofits that work internationally would be wise to tweet around the clock, but even nonprofits that limit their mission and services to their own country, province, state, city, or village should experiment with being a global twitizen. There are ex-pats in every corner of the globe, media outlets of every nationality, and allies from other countries that your nonprofit does know exist yet. The world is getting smaller with each passing day, and nonprofits as the agents of social good, should try to think bigger and stretch their Twitter wings beyond their own time zones. Here’s how to begin:"

Budget Friendly Videos for Nonprofits

Budget Friendly Videos for Nonprofits: "Video has long been a highly effective medium for getting out a message, but only in recent years — with the advent of inexpensive cameras, consumer-friendly editing software and broadband Internet — has it become truly accessible to everyone, including your nonprofit organization.

The apparent ease of production, however, does not mean video-making should be taken lightly. A well-crafted PSA or information video posted on your website and YouTube can be wonderful for garnering attention for programs, but a poorly executed one may well lack the flash to grab people's attention on the video-saturated we"

Social Media Decision Trees: When To Dive Deeper | Community Organizer 2.0: "My time is so stretched nowadays between personal life and professional life that when a new social platform such as today’s launch of Google comes around, I wonder: do I have time for yet another social network? Of course, I spent much of today hopping on and off of Google checking out what the other techies like me were doing with it, and exploring the Shiny New Platform. It really brought to mind how one decides which platform to dive deeply into and spend a lot of time on versus the platforms to skim or avoid. What we need is a well-defined decision tree for choosing where to dive deeply."

“One hundred per cent of the revenue we generated from this was to be donated to the flood relief effort,” he told AFP."
